20th Anniversary of Starting Point Program

The Polish American Association celebrated the 20th Anniversary of our Starting Point Program at the Jesuit Millennium Center on October 23, 2011. The Program, which offers substance abuse therapy and counseling, was initiated in 1991 thanks to the efforts of Karen Popowski - our then Executive Director, Agnieszka Kowalewicz, Maryla Jaworska and Krzysztof Lewandowski of the Polish American Association. Great educational guidance was provided by Prof. Wiktor Osiatynski, who was present at this event. Prof. Osiatynski is one of the funders of the Commission of Education on Alcoholism and Drug Addiction at the Stefan Batory Foundation in Warsaw and a Visiting Professor at the Central European University, Legal Studies Department. The program participants and its counselors gave testimonies at the celebration emphasizing the fact that thanks to the dedication of the Program therapists and community resources human lives could be saved. Over 100 people were in attendance at the event.
