This course is designed for intermediate ESL students who plan to enroll in career-training programs offered by community colleges. The primary objective of the program is to develop students’ speaking, reading and writing skills in preparation for further study at the level of vocational training programs. The course offers preparation in basic skills related to computer science and technical English, a review of basic math terminology as well as introduction to occupational safety vocabulary.

Program Goals:

  • Students will develop their ESL skills to meet the academic level of vocational training programs in manufacturing.
  • Students will gain skills needed for the workplace, such as improving their workplace-related small talk abilities.
  • Students will learn manufacturing terminology.
  • Students will improve their problem solving and critical thinking skills, especially by applying mathematics in manufacturing settings.
  • Students will be familiarized with occupational safety terminology.
  • Students will develop career planning skills, including writing a resume and a cover letter, as well as conducting mock job interviews.
  • Students will improve their reading comprehension and writing skills, especially related to general manufacturing.
